Hello and welcome to Oakfield Centre for Education. The facility was developed
in response to a growing need for well-structured affordable and comprehensive
training and materials in dementia and aged care
Dementia is an umbrella term used to describe a group of diseases that affect
the brain. This causes a progressive decline in the ability to think, remember and
learn.
Dementia effects people differently and can impact on their carer’s and their
families.
At Oakfield we have committed to research and development of dementia skills
and dementia training. Our aim is to
• Improve the dementia skill care of health and aged care professionals
• Encourage innovative and flexible approach to dementia care
• Strengthen the networks between aged care professionals, researchers
and training organisation’s.
Our objective is to ensure that there is a wide range of courses and materials
available which are aimed at improving the care services for those living with
dementia.
Head of the education department is Lynda Gannon. A health scientist, Lynda
has been with Oakfield nursing home for the last three years researching and
developing a range of programs including; an extensive activities program,
physical health and nutrition and a spiritual care program for our residents.
Lynda also has a keen interest in Complementary and Alternative medicine and
is a registered homoeopath.
Currently, the use of non-invasive homoeopathic and herbal remedies are being
integrated into the care plan in our nursing home with great effect.
At present we are running trials using safe, non-invasive holistic therapies for
treatment of constipation, UTI’s and pressure sores/wound care.

In 2008 as part of the HAIRC Initiative, Oakfield Nursing Home took part in a research project looking into the holistic health of individuals living in residential care. The results of this offered evidence of the need to provide comprehensive person centered training and ongoing professional skills particularly in the field of Dementia/Alzhiemers and spiritual care skills.

As a result, the Oakfield Education Centre was developed in response to a growing need for well-structured affordable and comprehensive training and materials in dementia and aged care for both health care professionals and for those providing care for an elderly person.

Our aim is to:

  • Improve the education for health care professionals in dementia skills
  • Run informative and supportive courses for those caring for a relative or friend at home
  • Encourage innovative and flexible approach to dementia & aged care
  • Create a supportive and inclusive centre where eveyone, incuding those who live with dementia can come and learn

Our objective is to ensure that there is a regular and wide range of courses and materials available which are aimed at improving person centered care services

We hope that you will find a rich source of information to enhance both your practise and your understanding.
